Using Advanced Search

Advanced Search is used to achieve more precise and targeted results, especially when conducting detailed or specialized research. Here are key reasons why advanced search is valuable:

  1. Improved Relevance: Advanced search options, like Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), allow users to combine keywords and phrases to narrow down or broaden results, leading to more relevant findings.
  2. Efficient Filtering: By using specific limiters—such as author, affiliation, publication title, or publication year—researchers can quickly eliminate irrelevant content and focus on high-quality, targeted materials that meet their research criteria.
  3. Focused Content Types: Advanced search enables filtering by content type (journals, conferences, standards, etc.), allowing researchers to access the type of publication best suited to their needs, whether that’s recent conference proceedings for emerging topics or journals for peer-reviewed articles.
  4. Access to Authoritative Sources: Researchers can search for works by prominent authors, institutions, or publishers, helping them follow influential studies or verify information from reputable sources.
  5. Time-Saving: Advanced search reduces the time spent sifting through large volumes of data, enabling researchers to retrieve relevant results more efficiently, which is especially useful for systematic reviews or literature reviews.

Filters

On the left side of the screen, researchers can refine their search results using several filtering options. These include:

  • Subscribed Content or Open Access: Limit results to materials available through your institution’s subscription or to freely accessible open access content.
  • Publication Date: Restrict results to a specific date range, such as recent publications or a historical span relevant to your research.
  • Additional Filters: Other options allow refinement by publication type, such as journals, conference proceedings, and standards, ensuring that results are highly relevant to your needs.
